What is the 1,000 Won Breakfast Support Program?
The '1,000 Won Breakfast' program helps university students enjoy breakfast for just 1,000 won. The remaining cost is shared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Busan City, and each university. Students receive healthy and nutritious meals, including rice.
This program operates from March to December 2025, with participation from 12 universities in Busan. The '1,000 Won Breakfast' aims not only to reduce food expenses but also to increase the consumption of Busan rice and local agricultural products, contributing to the improvement of students’ eating habits. Active Support from Busan City
In addition to government support, Busan City allocated an additional 184.6 million won to support the breakfast programs of 12 universities. The Director of the Ocean and Fisheries Bureau of Busan City stated, “Through the 1,000 Won Breakfast Program, we will alleviate the financial burden of university students and promote the consumption of local rice, contributing to increasing farmers' income,” and emphasized that “we will continue to develop practical policies for the health and happiness of our citizens.”
Scale of Breakfast Provided by Each University
This year, the list of 12 participating universities in the '1,000 Won Breakfast' program and the scale of breakfast provided at each institution has been announced.
Gyeongnam Information University will provide 8,400 meals, Dongmyeong University will provide 19,200 meals, and Dongseo University will offer 12,000 breakfasts. Additionally, Dong-A University will provide 24,000 meals, Dongeui Science University will have 6,400 meals, and Dong-eui University will provide 8,000 meals.
Pukyong National University and Busan National University will support 24,000 meals and 20,500 meals respectively for many students. Busan Catholic University will provide 7,200 meals, Busan Gyeongsan University will support 26,820 meals, and Busan University of Foreign Studies will provide 22,080 meals, while Korea Maritime University will supply 6,000 meals.
In particular, Busan Gyeongsan University, Dong-A University, and Pukyong National University are expected to significantly assist many students by providing over 20,000 meals annually.
How is the Program Operated?
Each university offers breakfast in various ways. Using cafeterias or facilities is common; however, partnerships with convenience stores or external restaurants are also possible depending on the situation. Additionally, breakfast can be chosen in a take-out format.
The menu mainly consists of rice, rice products, and convenience meals (e.g., rice bread, rice noodles, rice cereal), and if 30% of the budget is prioritized for local agricultural products like Busan rice, an incentive is provided.
This approach is expected to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy, going beyond merely providing meals. It will provide healthy meals to university students while also positively impacting local agriculture.
