Promotion of Nature-Based Urban Forest at Gaya-daero BRT Station

The city of Busan plans to turn the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) station on Gaya-daero into a nature-based urban forest, rather than just a simple waiting area.

Through this project, it plans to alleviate the urban heat island phenomenon and create a unique green space in Busan.

Transforming Stations into Naturalistic Gardens

View of Jurye Station BRT

The city of Busan plans to transform 12 BRT stations (from Jurye Station to Dong-Eui University Station) into nature-friendly garden spaces. This aims to improve the existing barren station environment and create a space where one can feel nature in the city.

The naturalistic gardens will showcase various appearances in each season. In spring, new sprouts and flowers will bloom; in summer, lush green leaves and shade will form. In autumn, reeds and autumn foliage will create beautiful scenery, and in winter, it will be designed to still experience the beauty of nature.

Each station will have short walking paths and benches to create an environment where citizens can comfortably enjoy nature. It is expected that such changes will provide opportunities for people to directly experience nature in the city.

Garden Designer Participation and Creative Design Competition

Greening Project at Yanghwa Sinchon-ro Bus Stop in Seoul

This project involves not just simple landscaping work, but a design competition in which professional garden designers will participate.

The design competition will take place from March 6th to March 14th, with the final selected works planned to be announced in June. Following this, the detailed design will be completed in the first half of the year, with construction expected to commence in the second half. This project aims to be completed before the 106th National Sports Festival scheduled for September 2025.

Busan plans to select works that well reflect the unique characteristics of Busan through this competition. Additionally, citizen opinions will be reflected to create a creative garden-type urban forest. Through such efforts, it is hoped that Busan's urban environment will become richer.

Will the BRT Station Turn into a New Green Space for Citizens?

Greening Project at Yanghwa Sinchon-ro Bus Stop in Seoul

The city of Busan plans to introduce various gardening techniques at the BRT station to create a space where citizens can feel the beauty of nature and experience seasonal changes.

However, personally, I have doubts about whether the budget for such aesthetic improvements is appropriate. It is worth deep contemplation whether it is right to spend a huge budget while waiting for a bus for a short time and whether improving the convenience that citizens actually need is more urgent.

If such matters are properly considered, more practical and beneficial changes can be achieved.
