Postponement of Cherry Blossom Festivals in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang due to Wildfire Disaster
The recent large forest fire has seriously affected the cherry blossom festival schedule. The fire, which started in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang, has spread to Sancheong, Hadong, and Uljin, Ulsan, escalating to a national disaster. Accordingly, local governments in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang have decided to postpone or temporarily suspend the cherry blossom festivals.
This decision is the result of prioritizing citizen safety and wildfire response, and local governments and festival organizing committees have announced plans to adjust the schedule while continuing the festival programs without reduction.
This year, the cherry blossom blooming period is expected to start 2-3 days later than anticipated, around the 25th and 26th. However, many places in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang planned to hold cherry blossom festivals this week, making this situation quite unfortunate. Wildfire Escalates to National Disaster Level... Casualties Increase
As of the 27th, according to the Central Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, the current statistics indicate 26 fatalities, 8 seriously injured, and 22 with minor injuries due to the wildfire.
Additionally, 325 homes and facilities have been affected, and approximately 24,000 people have been evacuated. Currently, more than 9,300 people are still unable to return home.
In particular, the areas with cherry blossom attractions, such as Sancheong, South Gyeongsang, Uiseong, North Gyeongsang, and Uljin, Ulsan, have suffered significant damage, making the postponement of the festivals unavoidable.
Kangseo District's 'Kangseo Nakdonggang Cherry Blossom Festival' Postponed by One Week
Kangseo District in Busan has decided to postpone the start date of the '8th Kangseo Nakdonggang Cherry Blossom Festival' from March 28 to one week later. The new dates will be from April 4 to 6 at Daecho Ecological Park.
The Mayor of Kangseo emphasized, "This decision was made with the safety of residents and visitors as the top priority," and stated, "We will share the pain with the residents affected by the wildfire." Cultural performances, exhibitions, and experiential events will be prepared again according to the changed schedule.
Tongyeong Bongsutgol Flower Outing Festival Changed to April 5-6
The Bongsutgol Flower Outing Festival scheduled to take place in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang, has been postponed by one week. Originally planned for March 29 to 30, the dates have been adjusted to April 5-6 due to the delayed cherry blossom blooming and the national disaster situation.
The organizers stated that they plan to continue various existing programs such as drawing contests, trot contests, busking, and flea markets, and will provide more detailed guidance to inform the public.
Sacheon Seonjin Fortress Cherry Blossom Festival Also Delayed to April 5-6
The '6th Seonjin Fortress Cherry Blossom Festival' was scheduled to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the integration of Sacheon City and the '2025 Year of Visit Sacheon,' but has been postponed by one week due to the wildfire warning being raised to 'serious.'
This festival is now set to take place from April 5 to 6 around Seonjin Fortress, featuring various programs including K-pop dance performances, historical experiences, flea markets, photo zones, and night illuminations.
In particular, a special performance in memory of wildfire victims is also being prepared for April 4, making it a more meaningful event.
Nammok Cherry Blossom Festival in Ulsan Donggu Also Temporarily Postponed
The 8th Nammok Cherry Blossom Festival scheduled in Donggu, Ulsan is currently postponed. It was originally set to take place on March 29 at Soepyung Children's Park in Nammok 3-dong, but the schedule has been adjusted in response to the wildfire situation in nearby Uljin.
The organizing committee plans to carefully monitor the wildfire situation and will announce the new schedule.
Postponed Festivities, But Citizen Safety is the Priority
The postponement of cherry blossom festivals nationwide, which signals the start of spring, is a careful consideration of citizen safety and the wildfire disaster.
