Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line Begins Construction on 26th, Officially Opening the Era of Rail in Northern Gyeonggi
The long-awaited metropolitan railway network in the northern Gyeonggi region is finally starting construction.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Metropolitan Transport Committee held the Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line groundbreaking ceremony on March 26 at the Yangju Uijeongbu Lake Park, officially commencing the "Uijeongbu-Pocheon Metropolitan Railway Construction Project," which is the second phase of the extension of Seoul Subway Line 7.
This project aims for completion in 2030, generating great expectations among local residents.
The Core Axis of Rail Traffic in Northern Gyeonggi, Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line
The Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line is the second phase extension of Line 7, which starts from Dobongsan in Seoul and connects to Pocheon. This line includes a total distance of 16.9km from Goip-dong in Yangju to Gunnae-myeon in Pocheon, with 4 new stations and 1 maintenance depot planned to be established.
The total cost required for this project is approximately 1.5067 trillion won, with diverse financial support planned from the national government, local governments, city funds, and Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH).

Section 1 is scheduled to start in March 2024. Sections 2 and 3 are planned to commence in the first half of 2025. The entire section aims to be completed by the second half of 2030.
Commute Time Reduced by 24 Minutes! Anticipating Metropolitan Transport Innovation
Once the Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line is completed, the commuting time from Pocheon to Dobongsan Station will be reduced from the current 62 minutes to 38 minutes, cutting the travel time by about 24 minutes.
This is expected to greatly enhance metropolitan transport convenience for residents of Yangju and Pocheon. As access to central Seoul improves, it is anticipated that the living area of the northern Gyeonggi region will expand, positively impacting the local economy.
Particularly, this line will serve as a turning point in transforming the existing bus and road-centered transport system into a rail-centered public transportation system by connecting Uijeongbu, Yangju, and Pocheon as a single railway axis. Such changes are expected to contribute to improving the quality of life for local residents.
A Key Project for National Balanced Development Promoted as an Exemption from Preliminary Feasibility Study
The Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line is an important railway construction project that received exemption from preliminary feasibility studies as part of the national balanced development project initiated in 2019. This project successfully commenced construction after undergoing several stages of administrative procedures.
In 2017, it was reflected in the 3rd Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan, and in 2019, it received exemption from preliminary feasibility studies and project plan review. Subsequently, in 2022, approval and public announcement of the basic plan were completed, and in 2023, the construction company was selected and design work began. Finally, in March 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held, and the start of Section 1 is scheduled.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Metropolitan Transport Office plan to increase national funding to ensure there are no delays in the 2030 completion. They also aim to expand connecting transportation infrastructure such as metropolitan transfer centers, improvement of congested roads, and expansion of K-Pass.
The Realization of the Extension of Line 7, the Core Axis of the Northern Gyeonggi Railway Network
The northern extension of Seoul Subway Line 7 is an important event that can fundamentally change the spatial structure of the northern metropolitan area beyond simply expanding the transportation network.
The commencement of the Uijeongbu-Pocheon Line marks a significant first step in enhancing Pocheon citizens' accessibility to Seoul and contributing to Yangju's leap to becoming a metropolitan center.
