Seongnam~Bokjeong Wide BRT Construction Project Implementation Plan Approved, 2025 Construction Start, 2027 Opening Target
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Traffic Commission has approved the implementation plan for Phase 1 of the Seongnam~Bokjeong Wide BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) construction project on Sanseong-daero.
Therefore, this project is set to start construction in May 2025 and aims for a complete operational launch in the first half of 2027.
Overview of the Seongnam~Bokjeong Wide BRT Project
BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is a public transport system that enhances the speed and punctuality of buses through dedicated roads and a signal priority system. The aim of this project is to improve transportation connections between Seongnam and Seoul and reduce congestion during commuting hours.
Here is an overview of the project.
The route will connect from the entrance of Namhansanseong in Seongnam City to Bokjeong Station in Seoul, spanning a total length of 10.2 km.
The section is divided into two phases, with the first phase covering 5.2 km of Sanseong-daero connecting from Moran Station to the entrance of Namhansanseong. The second phase will progress along Seongnam-daero for 5.0 km connecting from Moran Station to Bokjeong Station.
This project is set to take place from 2022 to 2027, with a total project cost of 46 billion won, including 26.8 billion won for phase 1 and 19.2 billion won for phase 2.
The project will be led by Seongnam City in Gyeonggi-do and is expected to contribute to local development.
Current Status of the Seongnam~Bokjeong Wide BRT Phase 1 (Sanseong-daero)
I will explain the Phase 1 project section and major stops.
The section will connect from Moran Station (Seongnam-dong) to the entrance of Namhansanseong (Yangji-dong), with a total distance of 5.2 km.
Major stops include Moran Station, Comprehensive Sports Complex Entrance, Dandaeogori Station, Court and Prosecutors' Office, Eulji University, and the entrance of Namhansanseong.
The main details of Phase 1 will feature the construction of a dedicated BRT road.
A total of 33 stops will be installed, comprising 16 central stops and 17 existing roadside stops.
Traffic systems in intersections and signal operations are also planned for improvement.
Construction will start in May 2025 and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.
The goal is to open in the first half of 2027.
Expected Benefits
The travel time from Moran Station to the entrance of Namhansanseong has decreased. It previously took 25 minutes, but now it takes 15 minutes, reducing the time by about 10 minutes.
Travel speed has also improved, with the average speed increasing from 12.4 km/h to 19.9 km/h, which signifies an enhancement of about 7.5 km/h.
Accessibility to Seoul has significantly improved. The connection to Bokjeong Station through the Seongnam~Bokjeong BRT Phase 2 project has made public transport utilization even more convenient.
As a result, traffic congestion during commuting hours is expected to decrease, and public transportation usage rates are anticipated to increase.

Phase 2 Project Overview
Section: 5.0 km section from Moran Station to Bokjeong Station
Project Cost: Total of 19.2 billion won
Project Schedule:
- Basic and detailed design will commence in January 2025.
- The implementation plan is expected to be approved in the first half of 2026, leading to the start of construction.
- The goal is to achieve opening in the first half of 2027.
Once completed, the BRT route is expected to be extended to Seoul's Bokjeong Station, greatly enhancing public transport accessibility between Seoul and Seongnam.

Between March and May 2025, the bidding and commencement of Phase 1 construction are anticipated to occur. Subsequently, in the first half of 2026, the completion of Phase 1 construction and approval of Phase 2 implementation plan will proceed.
Construction for Phase 2 will be conducted from the second half of 2026 to the first half of 2027, along with the expected opening.
The Metropolitan Traffic Commission will continuously monitor the smooth progress of the project and actively incorporate resident feedback.
