Ulsan City Completes Improvement Project for Buk-Ulsan Station Transfer System... Greatly Enhances Public Transportation Convenience
Ulsan City has successfully completed the Buk-Ulsan Station transfer system improvement project, significantly enhancing the convenience of public transportation.
In this project, new transfer facilities for buses and taxis have been built, and a new entrance and exit road directly connecting Auto Valley Road and Buk-Ulsan Station has been established, greatly improving transportation accessibility.
As a result of these changes, citizens' use of public transportation has become much smoother.
What has changed in the Buk-Ulsan Station transfer system improvement project?
On March 10, Ulsan City held a completion ceremony for the Buk-Ulsan Station transfer system improvement project near Buk-Ulsan Station at 3 PM. Approximately 100 people attended the event, including Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, local lawmakers, city and district council members, as well as residents, to celebrate the completion of the project. The transfer facilities and entrance/exit roads at Buk-Ulsan Station officially began operations the day after the event, on March 11.
This project was initiated after completing the detailed design in 2020 and began construction in December 2022, finishing in about 2 years and 3 months. A total of 8.7 billion won was spent, of which 2.1 billion won was funded by the national government and 6.6 billion won by the city government. Major improvements include the opening of a new entrance and exit road connecting Auto Valley Road and Buk-Ulsan Station, alongside the installation of a large pedestrian overpass measuring 43m in length and 4.3m in width.
Additionally, new transfer facilities for buses and taxis have been established, and smart platforms and waiting areas for transfers have been constructed, creating a more convenient transportation environment. This improvement project is expected to provide better transportation services to local residents.
Enhanced Accessibility with a Large Pedestrian Overpass
Passengers using Buk-Ulsan Station experienced a lot of inconvenience due to the lack of a direct path from Auto Valley Road to the station. However, thanks to the recent improvement project, a pedestrian-centric overpass has been created, greatly enhancing accessibility for both public transit and vehicle users.
The newly installed overpass is a large structure measuring 4.3m in width and 43m in length, making pedestrian movement between Auto Valley Road and Buk-Ulsan Station much safer and more convenient. This overpass is equipped with elevators and bike ramps, creating an accessible environment for those with mobility challenges.
Moreover, the transfer waiting area is equipped with smartphone chargers and heating/cooling facilities, providing various considerations for the convenience of passengers. With this improvement, Buk-Ulsan Station is expected to become a more convenient transportation hub for many people.
Buk-Ulsan Station is transforming into a Southeastern Region Transportation Hub
Buk-Ulsan Station has established itself as an important station since its opening in 2021, serving several trains including the Mugunghwa-ho. From 2024, ITX-Maum trains to Cheongnyangni and Gangneung will be added to the service, leading to a steady increase in passenger numbers.
Moreover, starting in 2026, the Donghae Line Metropolitan Railway is scheduled to extend to Buk-Ulsan Station, which is expected to attract even more passengers to this station. These changes will significantly enhance the convenience of local transportation.
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom stated at the completion ceremony, "This transfer system improvement project has laid the foundation for Buk-Ulsan Station to grow beyond Ulsan to become a transportation transfer hub for the southeastern region." He emphasized that "to further promote public transportation use, we will continuously pursue additional transportation infrastructure expansion."
Ulsan City plans to carefully assess bus routes and the possibility of increasing services to allow citizens to transfer more conveniently. Currently, city buses such as route 142, 216, and 219 pass through Buk-Ulsan Station, and this improvement project has also established new bus and taxi stop zones. These changes are expected to provide citizens with better transportation convenience.
Conclusion: A More Convenient Buk-Ulsan Station, An Expected Future
The Buk-Ulsan Station transfer system improvement project is an important initiative to strengthen the public transportation-centered urban traffic system, going beyond mere facility expansion. This project has reduced transfer times to less than 2.8 minutes and transfer distances to within 171 meters, greatly improving the convenience of public transportation for citizens.
Moreover, considering the potential for future placement of Urban Railway Line 2 (Tram) and KTX-Ium, Buk-Ulsan Station is expected to establish itself as a key hub for transportation in the southeastern region, extending beyond Ulsan. This transfer system improvement project is expected to provide a more convenient transportation environment for Ulsan citizens while also serving as an important turning point with positive impacts on urban development.
