Busan Taxi 5,860 Units Oversupplied, 5th Busan Metropolitan City Taxi Total
Busan Metropolitan City announced the '5th Busan Metropolitan City Taxi Total' on April 9, 2025. Currently, there are 23,337 licensed taxis, of which 5,860 are reported to be in a state of oversupply. This announcement organizes the total quantity standards for the years 2025 to 2029 in accordance with Article 9 of the 'Law on the Development of Taxi Transport Business' and Article 7 of the Enforcement Decree.
Examining the status of taxi licenses in Busan, the total number of licenses is 23,337. Of these, general taxis account for 9,524 units (40.8%), while individual taxis comprise 13,813 units (59.2%). However, the appropriate number of taxis is 17,477, which corresponds to 74.9% of the total. Therefore, the current oversupply situation is represented by 5,860 units, amounting to 25.1% of the total. This has led to issues of reduced efficiency in the taxi market.
This investigation's findings will be used as basic data to address the imbalance between taxi demand and supply. In the future, it is planned to reflect these findings in policies for taxi reduction or improvements in transport efficiency. In particular, other cities like Daegu are currently facing the reality of drivers’ livelihoods being threatened due to oversupply. In this situation, it is becoming increasingly necessary for Busan to proactively address similar issues.
Recently, Daegu City analyzed the taxi oversupply to be 5,446 units, reporting that drivers’ daily incomes do not even cover lunchtime expenses.
Busan is also faced with complex issues such as the increase of idle taxis, decreased operating efficiency, and driver aging.
In this situation, implementing effective policies after the total quantity notification will emerge as a very important task.
