Fixing Samsung LED TV Backlight Issues: How to Self-Replace the Diffuser Lens for UN60J6350AFX and Cost-Saving Tips

Samsung LED TV Backlight Failure, DIY Method and Cost for Self-Replacement of the UN60J6350AFX Diffusion Lens

image

I have been using the Samsung 60-inch LED TV model UN60J6350AFX for almost a decade since its release in 2016.

However, a few years ago, small white dots began to appear on the screen, and over time, their number has increased to the point where the entire screen is filled with white spots. This phenomenon is known to occur due to the diffusion lens detaching from the LED backlight.

Due to the high costs of official service centers and private repairs, I decided to try self-repair this time. DIY repairs can be a great way to save costs while adding the fun of solving problems.

Many people consider replacing or repairing their TV when problems arise. However, in this post, I want to share my experience of replacing the backlight myself. It is possible to do it without a suction cup, and it is a repair method that can be safely attempted as a DIY project.

Below is the entire process of disassembling and assembling the TV without a suction cup.

Symptoms and Causes of Diffusion Lens Backlight Failure

image

The white dots that appear on LED TVs are primarily caused by light diffusion phenomena resulting from the detachment of the diffusion lens.

LEDs emit strong light at a very narrow angle, and the diffusion lens plays the role of evenly spreading this light. However, over time, these lenses may become detached due to adhesive failure or degradation, causing concentrated light to emit from certain areas, leading to white spots.

This issue can be resolved by replacing the entire LED backlight. However, since the parts to be replaced vary by product, it's important to search for and purchase the appropriate parts for your specific model.

Necessary Tools and Basic Information for DIY Repair

image

The essential tools include a replacement LED backlight and a power screwdriver, as well as a small + screwdriver. A vacuum suction cup is helpful, but the work can also be done without one. Having a card or a scraper can be useful for separating the frame.

This task is of intermediate difficulty, and those with experience in PC assembly can complete it without issues. However, due to the size of the TV, and the fact that the LCD is thin and sensitive, it is advisable to work with two people together. Overall, the estimated time for the entire task is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Preparation Process and Preliminary Learning for Backlight Replacement

image

First, you need to prepare the necessary replacement LED backlight. Searching for 'UN60J6350AFX backlight' will easily lead you to find it on online shopping sites like Coupang. By entering the product name along with 'backlight,' you can purchase the appropriate LED backlight, which I bought for 58,000 won.

Many people believe that a suction cup is necessary to disassemble the TV screen. However, many YouTube videos show methods to disassemble without a suction cup. As the disassembly structure and procedures differ by model, it's essential to study in advance through YouTube or blogs before starting work.

Once you have prepared the parts and tools and have enough understanding of the disassembly method, you can proceed to the actual work.

1. Remove the TV from the wall and unscrew the back

image

After carefully removing the TV from the wall, lay it face down on a soft cloth.

image
image

You need to unscrew all the screws, and since there are many screws, using a power screwdriver is effective. Additionally, it's helpful to prepare an organizer to keep track of the screws so they are not lost.

2. Remove the bottom cover

image

The bottom frame cover of the TV can be easily removed by lifting it slightly from the top. The absence of fixed screws makes it advantageous for easy removal.

3. Flip to the front and detach the LCD frame

image
image
image

Start the process of detaching the frame by flipping the TV to the front. The back is secured with clips, so using a scraper or plastic card can help in removing it easily.

image

There are small fixing bolts at the bottom, so a small screwdriver needs to be prepared. In particular, for older models, screws may corrode and be difficult to unscrew, so special care is needed.

4. Flip to the back and disconnect the LCD connection cable

image

image

Flip the TV to the back again and you need to disconnect the FFC cable that connects the LCD and the circuit board. This cable is sensitive, so carefully lift the black retaining pin with your fingernail and pull the cable forward to safely disconnect it.

5. Organize the circuit board and cables

image

After disconnecting the cables, you need to create some free space so that the LCD and circuit board can be safely separated. This procedure must be done systematically for the LCD to be securely detached.

6. Remove the LCD without a suction cup

image
image

If you don't have a suction cup, you must tilt the TV slightly and lift one side to flip it over for detachment.

As the LCD is very thin and fragile, it should never be lifted by hand. It is safer to work with two people instead of one.

7. Detach the internal frame

image

To remove the LED backlight from the main unit, there are clips securing the four corners of the internal frame. It is necessary to press these clips and carefully detach them using a scraper or plastic card.

8. Remove the light guide plate (LGP)

image

After removing the frame, carefully lift the light guide plate. It is made of thin and flexible material, requiring caution when handling. It can fold or break easily if mishandled, so proceed carefully. It is advisable to place it safely aside to avoid confusion about its orientation.

9. Detach the guide parts and clips

image
image

At the bottom of the light guide plate, there is a plastic guide part that supports its structure.

Over time, this plastic can wear out and become damaged. By slightly lifting the main unit and pressing the fixing pins on the back, it can be relatively safely detached. If a few parts break during this process, don't worry too much and continue.

10. Remove the existing backlight

image

Most of the diffusion lenses are left in a detached state. Slowly peel off the cellophane to finally expose the LED backlight.

image
image

Remove the horizontal LED bar. The vertical LED bar acts as a power supply, so it should be left in place.

image

By gently pressing the fastening pin of the vertical bar, the LED bar can be detached.

11. Install the new backlight and perform lighting test

image
image
image

This is the process of assembling the newly purchased LED bar. Thoroughly inspect to ensure there are no missing lenses, and then connect them two at a time in a horizontal direction as before.

image

After connecting the power cable, check to see if all lights are uniformly lit. If any problems arise during this process, immediate action must be taken.

Fortunately, all the lights turned on properly. It's important to handle everything carefully to prevent electric shock accidents.

12. Assemble in reverse order of disassembly

image

Once you have verified that all the LED bars are functioning correctly, begin the assembly process. First, carefully place the light guide plate back onto the main unit.

image

The damaged plastic guide should be attached by evenly distributing the fastening pins at the center and corners. Next, assemble the frame, flip the main unit to place the LCD, and connect the cables.

After securing the frame again and aligning the front side, finally cover the back panel and tighten all the screws to complete the repair.

Post-Repair Condition and Conclusion

image

image

All white spots have been removed, and the brightness of the screen has returned to normal.

Whether due to the compatibility of the LED backlight or insufficient even distribution of the light guide plate, or simply due to aging causing some stains, there are no significant issues for viewing. The lens detachment that was the previous cause of failure has been completely resolved.

image

I forgot to reassemble the bottom cover, but there are no functional issues. I will just leave it off.

image

Investing about 60,000 won and 1 hour and 30 minutes to repair the TV was a very rewarding experience.

In the future, if it breaks down again, I will consider simply buying a new one.
